Round Rock, TX (October 8, 2018) – Pets are a wonderful distraction. In fact, it’s been scientifically proven that being around pets provides a holistic boost to health, especially for seniors, which is why Poet’s Walk Round Rock, a memory care community, has an active Pet Therapy program.
“We have seen the impact that Pet Therapy has on our residents,” said Erio Rosario, Executive Director at Poet’s Walk Round Rock. “Whether they have a visit from a therapy dog or even a therapy mini-horse, animals are able to bring out happiness in our residents and that is priceless.”
Poet’s Walk ensures that each senior has the opportunity to enjoy the company of an animal. Interacting with pets allows residents to derive physical and psychological benefits which increases alertness and function for memory care residents. Being with animals also lessens seniors’ anxiety and increases their sense of overall happiness. When elements like these are addressed, it can result in a decrease in hospitalizations and bouts of sickness.
“One of the residents’ favorite activities is PawFest, a festival where we celebrate our four-legged family members,” said David Melton, Director of Resident Engagement at Poet’s Walk Round Rock. “On Friday, October 12, our residents’ families, staff and the community are invited to bring their pets to Poet’s Walk Round Rock for a variety of activities. There will be a pet costume contest where everyone will win a prize, the Williamson County Animal Shelter will bring cats and dogs looking for their forever homes, there will be food and drink for all and more. We are also collecting canned pet food, cat or dog treats, dry food, cat litter, newspapers, sheets, blankets and monetary donations for the Shelter.”
Poet’s Walk Round Rock even welcomes personal pets. The Pets Are Welcome (PAW) program is a part of Poet’s Walk Signature Touches initiative where residents are encouraged to bring their pets to live with them, with certain guidelines. Pets have always played a nostalgic role in the lives of Poet’s Walk residents. By allowing pets to live with residents and be a part of their daily lives, memories with old family and friends are often recalled. The constant, unfiltered affection from pet is often exactly what a senior needs. The PAW program provides the perfect setting to bring seniors and companion animals together—both excited to see each other.
