Specialized memory care providers like Poet’s Walk are geared towards treating and assisting patients with illnesses such as Alzheimer’s. However, there are several side effects of cancer and its treatment that mean dementia care and cancer care share many of the same approaches. For our memory care assisted living residents that undergo cancer treatment, the Spring Hills Community’s Wellness Team is proud to offer an Oncology Program. This unique program relies on natural, holistic treatments and an educational approach to the care and management of several chemotherapy-related conditions.
Cancer Education Services for Seniors and Loved Ones
Every form of cancer and treatment is different, just as every patient. The caregivers of Poet’s Walk understands the unique symptoms that your loved one may face and we are dedicated to helping them management them in the best possible way. In addition to providing qualified care and attention, our team is proud to serve as a resource for seniors and their families.
With the help and guidance of Poet’s Walk, our seniors can discover how to manage common effects of cancer and chemotherapy, including:
- Cancer Fatigue—Excessive feelings of tiredness are very common among cancer patients and those undergoing radiation treatment. This lack of energy can result in feelings of depression and anxiety.
- Terminal Delirium—Also referred to as terminal restlessness, this is a common occurrence among those in the late stages of cancer, marked by noticeable cognitive decline, as well as feelings of agitation, confusion, and physical and emotional restlessness.
- Chemo Fog—This condition, also called chemo brain or chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment, is a common side effect of chemotherapy, consisting of memory loss or a noticeable change in normal cognitive functioning.
Senior Cancer Management Through Dedicated Assisted Living
While many cancer patients don’t always have the energy for physical activity, light exercise and socialization is an important part of recovery, actually helping to increase the chances of remissions. Our Oncology Wellness Program combines several effective components of dementia and cancer care, providing our residents with holistic treatments designed to combat the most common side effects of the illness.
Activities such as tai chi and yoga promote physical health, increasing mobility, flexibility, and strength. Meanwhile, activities such as gardening and art classes provide seniors the chance to relieve any agitation they may be feeling as a result of cancer, as well as socialize with others who may be in similar circumstances. With the help of our caregivers, your loved one can have access to the tailored care they need to continue leading a fulfilling life that they love.
