The Benefits of Essential Oils for Elderly Dementia Patients

With our holistic approach to assisted living and senior care, our specialized memory care facilities are dedicated to staying on top of the latest developments in alternative therapy and care. As part of our unceasing efforts at providing the best level of care, we are proud to offer a variety of wellness programs, including our Signature Aromatherapy Program. Unique to Poet’s Walk, this program allows our residents to enjoy the therapeutic effects of essential oils, such as peppermint and lavender, which ease depression and anxiety while aiding in healthy cognitive functioning.

Essential Oils for Easing Dementia Symptoms

At Poet’s Walk, we strive to offer the most effective holistic treatments. With so many modern studies showing that therapeutic aromatherapy is one of the simplest ways to improve cognitive abilities and combat symptoms of Alzheimer’s, our aromatherapy program is designed to provide our residents with all the soothing benefits that essential oils have to offer.

While we use a variety of oils to promote wellness among our elderly dementia patients, the two that we often find the most effective are lavender and peppermint.

Poet's Walk Essential Oil ProgramLavender Essential Oil

Because lavender is traditionally used to calm strong emotions and aid sleep, it is one of the most common essential oils used in therapeutic aromatherapy for Alzheimer’s. It is also said to be a natural antidepressant and mood booster.

One way we use lavender essential oil: We rely on the calming properties of lavender essential oil to help our residents relax, often used in evening hand massages to help residents enjoy a full night of rest and get all the benefits that sleep has to offer.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil has energizing properties and is best used in the mornings, but its fresh and instantly recognizable smell make it one of our personal favorites. It is used by many to improve memory and focus, while also calming nerves.

One way we use peppermint essential oil: We regularly diffuse peppermint essential oil in the morning time, as it helps our residents start the day on the right foot. Plus, the lingering scent gives everyone a little boost of energy every time they inhale it.

A Simple and Holistic Treatment with Countless Benefits

We know that using essential oils for elderly dementia is effective. Whether it is through inhaling the essential oils we diffuse each day, or enjoyed through the personal touch of a hand massage provided by our trained staff, all our residents can enjoy the many benefits that this unique program has to offer.

Our Signature Aromatherapy program is just one of the many holistic approaches we use. If you would like to find our more about any of them, please feel free to contact us today.
