Seniors Practice Infection Prevention at Poet’s Walk Memory Care Communities

Spreading germs these days is as easy as touching something, like a door knob or railing, that someone else has touched. Preventing the spread of these germs is imperative to staying healthy. Especially in settings with children and seniors. The nurses, caregivers and staff at Poet’s Walk Cedar Park, located at 1503 Medical Parkway, focus on this prevention on a daily basis in an effort to keep everyone healthy and happy.

“Avoiding the spread of the common cold or the flu is so important to the well-being of everyone in our community,” said Yannique Mack, Director of Resident Care at Poet’s Walk Cedar Park. “Through handwashing, not sharing our drinks, repeated education and more, every day the team here does everything we can to stop a sickness from circulating throughout our Poet’s Walk family.”

Flu viruses can stay on a hard surface and be transferred to the hands potentially causing an infection for 24 hours. Simply washing one’s hands with soap before a mean or after using the restroom can reduce the incidence of respiratory infections like pneumonia by 25% and diarrhea by nearly half.

Additional tips to stop the spread of germs include:

  1. Cover one’s mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing with a tissue (throw away the tissue right away) or the inner crease of the elbow
  2. Wash one’s hands with warm water and soap often for at least 20 seconds
  3. Do not share utensils, food or drinks
  4. Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  5. Do not visit people, go to work or school when sick
  6. Clean common areas often with disinfectant

These tips and more all work together to stay healthy. Establishing the right habits from the beginning will go far in preventing the spread of germs and disease.
